Despite all the digital innovations, there’s nothing that quite beats the simplicity and accessibility of taking a notebook and drawing or writing something down. And unlike its digital counterpart, a physical book has tactile and material qualities that interact with different writing and drawing tools in lots of creativity-inducing ways; a felt pen glides along a high gloss paper in a very pleasant way and leaves lines so sharp that they are basically looking vectorized when scanned, while a coarser uncoated paper tears in the graphite of the pencil and enables shading and lines in an unprecedented way.
The handbound notebooks and booklets shown here are made with different cloth materials and papers for a broad range of pen types. In collaboration with My Widding, I have also developed a dry technique for attaching a textile material against the board, and thus making my own wrapping material. All books with textile cloth shown here use fabrics from My Widding’s extensive library of vintage fabrics glued to the board in accordance with the technology in question.
